Gradient trend has been widely used for quite some time by designers from many parts of the world. As you can see, currently, many applications, websites, and print designs of many big brands are starting to use this trend. Gradient offers a smooth color transition and is loved by many users because of the fresh colors it brings.
Today we’re going to learn some techniques to get even more creative using gradients.
Duotone is a smooth chromatic transition between two combined colors, it usually divides the transition between two colors equally. It’s very simple to create these gradients using the gradient tools in Illustrator and Photoshop. When combining colors to create Duotone gradients, there are usually no rules. The rule comes in when you mix 3 or more colors, but you can do whatever you want with two colors. It all depends on your intentions with the design itself. If you need a strong, bold message, you might consider using a more vibrant contrasting color combination. On the other hand, if you want to create a soft, casual feel, then use less saturated colors.
This gradient color trend gives a very fanciful and modern feel like a product from the future. To make a color effect like this is not easy, you need to know how to combine many colors. In addition, you need to make the Gradient give an iridescent effect like the effect of chrome plating.
The top 5 gradient trends include semi-transparent color transitions. These gradients have a fade-in and fade-out effect, they have full color at one end while opacity at the other end is 0%. These semi-transparent gradients can be Duotones or even three-tone gradients but they always end or start with zero transparency.
The Mesh Gradient is a color transition created with the Mesh tool in Illustrator, hence the title. This type of Gradient requires a bit of software skill. Usually, they are mixed colors together, and you should choose colors carefully as some colors will not match. Besides mixing multiple colors, they also form new shapes similar to liquids, giving them a more dynamic look. Mesh Gradient is a style that we love very much, can use with limitless creative possibilities.
Things just got more interesting with Gradient Blurs! I am sure if you are a real turmeric lover, you will love these psychedelic color effects. They are now part of the Top 5 Gradient Trends.
The Blur effects combined with the Gradient create a magical and extremely shimmering feeling.
They seem to be applied frequently as part of poster design. The wonderful thing about its abstraction can be used to describe a wide range of emotions and abstract concepts. It can be associated with sound, light, the universe, happiness or sadness.
The final gradient trend is the Gradient Sphere, which has a 3D feel, reminding us of planets and bubble shapes.
Gradient Sphere is used a lot in-app and website and Poster designs. Because of their resemblance to planets and objects is often used to give a futuristic, modern feel.
Tips for using Gradient
If you’re using an image with a gradient, the first step to take is to see if the image is suitable for using gradients. The photos have a clear focus and limited use of images with too much detail. The second thing worth spending some time researching is looking at the color of the photo. If the colors don’t match any style, converting the photo to black and white is the safest way. However, sometimes the image color can be adjusted using the Color Saturation or Color Balance tools in Photoshop. That’s exactly what I did in this example. The third is the selection of the shape of the Gradient and the Backdrop.
When selecting the right gradient objects, make sure that they all have similar colors. In my example, I used blue/purple objects in contrast to the pink/yellow objects. These are all the colors that I need in there. There are too many gradients and the components will get messy.
If you feel like something is missing, add geometric shapes, white if the background is light or black if the background is dark.
